I imagine there are countless stories of adventures of people who dosed and went on to have nights ranging from strange to wonderful to terrible to joyful
...
to terrifying, perhaps all in one night. Thanks for those who have already mentioned theirs, would love to hear more. A canceled show is one thing, but hearing such bad news being the reason wouldn't have helped ease one's mind. Though I imagine it's possible there were reports spreading from a few who had just seen them the night/s before who didn't think Jerry looked that bad other than his voice going. He looks pretty happy and healthy (for Jerry) on 11/24. And of course to add to the confusion Weir just says "Monday." I'm sure before that was clarified many thought "this Monday?"
At any rate, only a true taper would keep this, god bless em for it. I once taped a Christmas night show a local GD band put on where the show had to stop twice for separate medical emergencies, including a seizure, it was all quite frightening. I stopped my gear at the end of the night thinking I'd probably never listen to this one again. And I still haven't, like 90% of all the stuff I taped back then. But as I packed up after the show even the sound guy noted how it will be an interesting artifact for my collection. Both people were fine by the way.

Wow, it is surreal hearing this short snippet. I remember that night, and I can remember Bob W saying exactly what he said. I dosed, and when the lights
...
came on and Bob said Jerry was real sick and the band couldn't play.We all looked at each other and said "You mean we have to go home?" !! My brother and I drove home and had to explain to our parents why we were home so early! There were letters floating all over their bedroom floor.

I was there for this. It is true that no one seemed upset about the situation. Rather people were concerned for Jerry's health.
The upside was an outstanding ... tour in Jan of 79.
Was able to go both Philly, MSG and Nassau shows as well as the make up for this show. 1/10/79 was the return of Dark Star to the east coast and the St. Stephen is outstanding.
The funny part was that the make up show for this cancellation was my least favorite show of the Jan 79 tour!

I was 15 and had my ticket stolen by some hoods a couple weeks before this show. I called the house, told them my sob story and they said I could pick
...
one up at will call. My mom dropped me off and I had my first experience of trying to get into a Dead show dosed with no ticket! Suddenly, everyone was leaving the building and I scored an 11th row center ticket from some head who could not return for the make up. Next, I see the crew I suspected of breaking into my room and stealing my ticket during a party. I laughed so hard I thought I'd die. I boarded the southbound train the only happy head to see them cancel. My mom picked me up at the station just as I was coming down and I remember having a blast playing foosball with my older brothers friends debating Springsteen vs. Jerry. The make up on 1-17-79 was my 2nd show and being up front blew mind. The dbag that stole my ticket got busted for weed before the show and his friends were in the nose bleeds. Karma.

I remember ... the lights were off, we we were "on" and Bobby & Mickey coming out with the news of Jer on the respirator, i cannot recall a single boo nor anything said negative whatsoever, a lot of "Man I hope Jer will be alright" We went up to a bar on the corner and listen to an impromptu Elvis impersonator while we slammed down Balantine XXX Ale. The make-up show started with a Shakedown which was a "I told ya I'll be back" reassurance for us Jersey Freaks, this and the Springfield 1-15th were great times
